Harin's Story: A Journey of Resilience and Advocacy
Born in Thailand at just 27 weeks and weighing only 1 pound, Harin faced incredible odds. The doctors were sceptical of his survival, not even placing him in an incubator. But Harin's fighting spirit proved them wrong. Today, despite living with cerebral palsy and being a full-time wheelchair user, Harin refuses to let his disability define him. Instead, he embraces life with an adventurous spirit, attending concerts and shows across the UK and pushing the boundaries of what is possible.
However, Harin's love for adventure is often met with the harsh reality of limited accessibility. Finding suitable accommodation that meets his needs is a constant struggle. Hotels and holiday accommodations frequently lack the necessary facilities, such as hoists and profiling beds, and when they do offer disability-friendly options, the prices are often inflated. This unfair price hike is a barrier that prevents many people with disabilities from enjoying the freedom to explore the world.
The Petition: A Call for Change
In March 2022, Harin launched a petition calling for all hotels and holiday accommodations to have at least one room equipped with a hoist and profiling bed. This seemingly simple change would be life-changing for countless individuals who, like Harin, face significant challenges when travelling. The petition isn't just about accessibility; it's about equality. Harin believes that everyone, regardless of their abilities, should have the opportunity to enjoy life's experiences without unnecessary stress or financial burden.
The response to Harin's petition has been overwhelmingly positive. Families who face similar struggles have expressed gratitude, sharing stories of how the lack of accessible accommodations has impacted their lives. Yet, despite the support, Harin has also faced negativity. Some have questioned the value of his campaign, doubting whether it will make a difference. But Harin remains undeterred. Instead of letting criticism discourage him, it has strengthened his resolve to continue advocating for change.
Recognition and the Road Ahead
Harin's unwavering commitment to his cause was recognised in July 2023 when he was awarded the Sparkle Award for Most Inspiring Male. This accolade is a testament to his dedication and the impact of his work. But for Harin, the fight is far from over. He is determined to keep pushing for change, not just for himself but for everyone who faces similar challenges.
"I’m not doing this for fame or publicity—I’m doing it to inspire others,"
Harin says. His message is clear: No one should feel marginalised or disconnected because of their disability. Everyone has the power to make a difference, and by speaking out and pursuing their dreams, they can overcome obstacles.
